Dear Kindergarten Families,

The auction was a blast! I was able to connect with  parents and enjoy the beautiful scenery! Thank you to a the  parents from our class who joined in on the fun. Next year, I hope to have a better turn out as it was an amazing auction and all the money goes directly to our school!

I'd like to thank Jen Christensen for all the effort she put into creating such a delightful basket from our class! Thank you to you all for your donations to the basket. I also appreciate the support the Christensen family put into to the auction this year! Many many thanks!

This week we will discuss the changes that happen in Spring.  We will also begin a new theme about oviparous animals (animals that come from eggs). We'll be reading and discussing "Chickens Aren't the Only Ones". We will also sort mammals vs. oviparous animals and write sentences about each.

Word of the Week:  "him", "her"

In Math, we will continue to work on subtraction and addition word problems.

 Reminders: Spring Break 3/30-4/6

Have a fantastic week!

Dear Kindergarten Families!

We will continue our weather unit and students will recite poems for each type of cloud.  This is the perfect time of year to look at the sky daily and talk about the clouds.

In Math, students will solve problems using their math strategies that they've learned so far, then teach the peers how they solved it. It will be an excellent chance for students to work on team building, confidence and public speaking skills. The class will be using white boards so you might not see any of their work come home, this week.

In Writing, the students will write about their favorite weather pattern.  We will be having discussions around spring and the children can share their thoughts about the change in weather!

Word Wall Words:  "this", "that"

Some students have not been turning their folders in each day and once the day starts rolling there isn't much time to search through their backpacks for them. It is your child's responsibility to take their folder out at the beginning of the day so Mrs. Christensen or I can put their finished work and new take home readers in their folders to be sent home at the end of the day. Please give them a gentle reminder. Thank you!

Special thanks to Jen Christensen for putting together our basket for the auction! It was beautiful!

Dear Kindergarten Families,

I hope you're finding time to enjoy this beautiful and constantly changing weather! Speaking of weather, for the next two weeks we will discuss the different types of clouds. To remember the the different clouds your child will be making an adorable cloud book..

Words of the Week: "what"

In Math, we will continue our unit on "solid shapes". We will also  discuss how to solve problems using our special math strategies we have covered this year. Please continue to work on number printing at home.

In Writer's Workshop, students are showing off their writing ability.  They are continuing to challenge themselves by writing creative details and using correct punctuation.  Please check out our Monthly Writing wall in the classroom. I guarantee you'll be impressed with your child's writing ability.

Wednesdays are a long day for the Kindergarteners. We have snacks in the classroom, however the demand for snacks continue to increase.  Please remember to pack an extra snack and/or lunch for your little one on Wednesdays.

Our school auction is next week!  Please purchase your tickets and join us on March 10th from 4:00-9:00. Get a sitter, relax and shop!  The auction donations are amazing! Check our our class basket and bid!!! I hope to see you there!  All proceeds go directly to our school.

We are in need of hand sanitizer and paper towels.  If you're able to donate any of these items we would greatly appreciate it!

Have a wonderful week!

Dear Kindergarten Families,

March 2nd is Read Across America Day and Dr. Seuss Day!  Therefore, we'll be celebrating our love for reading this week by listening to a variety of Dr. Seuss books as we focus on the concept of rhyming as well as comparing characters, settings and story plots of these classic stories. We'll be doing a variety of fun Seuss-themed art/writing projects this week, which includes wearing our own hats and ties inspired by the Cat in the Hat.

Word of the Week:  "this"

In Math, we will continue reviewing addition and subtraction word problems.  The students have been working on word problems and are doing a great job figuring out how to solve problems using a variety of strategies.   The number sets are more challenging on the back page of our CGI work sheets.  It  would benefit your child if you could work through these problems at home.  Review our math strategies such as number bonds, number lines, ten-frames, pictures, part-part-whole, counting on and number sentences.

Last week in Writer's Workshop,  the class finished their "How To "narratives with covers and author's pages- they turned out awesome! They celebrated by having a P. J. party and a yummy treat while reading their stories to their stuffed animals and later to their reading buddies.  The books will come home next week. Please have your child read their story to you.  I'm sure you'll enjoy it! We also be discussing persuasive writing and, next week, we will write our first opinion piece. Then we will eventually be writing persuasive letters to our parents and later to  Mrs. Dorney.

Special thanks to Jen Christensen for providing a delicious treat for our P.J. party! The children really enjoyed it!

Our new round of "Star of the Day" is something about Spring or something green. They love trying to guess what each object is, so please have your child attach 3 clues to a bag describing their green object.

As a reminder, our class is responsible for a Playdoh themed Auction basket.  So far we only have kinetic sand, 2 Playdoh kits, sidewalk chalk and some Playdoh. If you would like to add to our basket, please send in any donations by Thursday, March 1st. The money raised in the auction goes directly to our school! Please buy your auction tickets in the park after school Wednesday. :)

Reminders:
Spring Auction on March 10th so buy your tickets!

Have a great week,

Dear Kindergarten Families,

I hope you're all enjoying the long holiday weekend!

This week we will continue our study on Presidents and Teeth.  Students will read about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.  We will compare and contrast these two Presidents throughout the week.

I want to thank Sam Christensen for supporting National Dental Care month by teaching a very engaging lesson on how to keep the sugar bugs off our teeth. The children had a blast and and learned a lot about proper dental hygiene. Thanks Dr. Sam!

Words of the Week:  "me", "we"

Math, we will continue to work on "counting collections" and word problems. Here is an idea you can do at home to help your child practice math strategies.  First, gather small items around your house.  Have your child count them (group by 5's or 10's, if possible).  Then, have your child write the number and draw how they counted the items.  Lastly,  have your child use one of the math strategies (tally marks, number line, ten-frame, counting on, number bond, part-part-whole or number sentence) to "make" that number.  i.e. if they counted by 5's they can show groups of 5 tally marks or  a number sentence (5+5+3=13).  It's a fun way to get your child excited about math!

Have you heard about the Spring Auction? It sounds pretty fun and exciting! Volunteer parents have been working hard to get ready for the annual auction on Saturday, March 10th. They were even able to get both the venue and Aptos BBQ food donated!  The only expenses are for rental equipment, d.j, bartender, etc.  Therefore, once the expenses are paid, the rest goes directly to our school.

The auction is a terrific way to support our school while having a great experience eating yummy food, socializing, and dancing. In addition, there is a live auction with Giant tickets, SC Warrior tickets, Safari West, a private chef dinner for 10, a ride on a fire truck and more. Also, besides the class baskets there will be other silent auction items, as well as raffle items. Something for everyone.

Parents will be selling tickets at the park after school on Wednesday, February 21st. What we NEED now are parents to purchase tickets. I will be there supporting our school and have fun!  Hope to see you all there!

There is no school this Monday, February 19th.  See you Tuesday!

Enjoy this beautiful weather,

Cathy Werner

Dear Kindergarten Families,

This week in Kindergarten, we will be finishing friendship projects.  Also, we will be centers on Tuesday focused around love and friendship.  Please remember to NOT write the names of each student on the "to" portion.  Just have your child write their name on the "from" portion. We have 22 students in our class

Word of the Week: "friend"

In Social Studies, we will learn about Presidents.  We will talk about Abraham Lincoln and George Washington.  We will also learn about the Lunar New Year.

Next Tuesday, please look for your child's first book from our new "Just Right Readers" take-home program. There is also a letter that explains this reading program. The students have been practicing these new books in class and I am VERY impressed with their abilities. So for now, just enjoy listening to them read each day! There is no rush to finish each book.  Please focus on fluency and comprehension.  It's not a race to the finish line and we really want the students to feel confident when reading their book.  Please return it whenever your child is ready to move on to a slightly harder book.
.
Enjoy the long weekend,

Cathy Werner

Dear Kindergarten Families,

This week in Kindergarten, we will be doing friendship, polar animals, and dental projects.

Our celebration on Tuesday, February 13th, will be focused on love and friendship. As a reminder, please do not write the names of each student on the "to" portion because it's challenging for the students to pass out Valentines if names are written in.  Just have your child write their name in the "from" portion.

Word of the Week:  "was"
In Math, we are talking about how to unpack word problems and showing a variety of ways to solve them.  We are reviewing the strategy, "counting on".
Our Spring Auction, hosted by RDMPA, is on March 10th from 4:00- 9:00. There will be a raffle, silent and live auction prizes.  It's a great way to to meet and greet other Rio families and staff members. It's also one of the ways Rio raises money for our school. It's a win-win event!  Our theme for our class basket is "Play dough ". If you're interested in donating auction prizes for the event, please contact Necole Greer at ngreer@ctrlkey.com<mailto:ngreer@ctrlkey.com> or Mary Sandman at mary_sandman@pvusd.net<mailto:mary_sandman@pvusd.net>. I hope to see you there!
