Hello Kindergarten Families,
March 2nd is Read Across America Day and Dr. Seuss Day! We'll be celebrating our love for reading this week by listening to a variety of Dr. Seuss books as we focus on the concept of rhyming as well as comparing characters, settings and story plots of many classic stories. We'll be doing a variety of fun Dr. Seuss-themed art/writing projects this week which includes wearing our own hats and ties inspired by the Cat in the Hat.
Word of the Week: "look".
In math, we will focus on reviewing "teen" numbers, math strategies and number writing. We will be sending home blank sheets for your child to practice writing numbers. Please correct your child's work if you notice reversals. Now that we are working with "teen" numbers, it is important to correct reversals so students understand that "12" is not the same as "21". We are also counting the "Ten Way" which you can do at home. When counting out loud, 10 is "one ten" (we've been showing this using ten sticks and single cubes), 11 is "one ten, one" , 12 is "one ten, two" and so on. 20 is "two ten" and 21 is "two ten, one" etc. Students will use the "Ten Way" as they move up in grades.
In Writers' Workshop, we will focus on punctuation and penmanship. We will also be sending home blank lined paper for your students to practice handwriting. Please focus on lower-case letters and correcting reversals. Thank you!
We will start our Art History lessons this week. Our first artist that we will be studying is Pablo Picasso. We will talk about "cubism". We will be looking at Vincent Van Gogh, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Henri Matisse later in the year. We will be making our own master pieces after studying each artists' style. Students will use a variety of pastels, tempera paints, and liquid water color. We will be making an art portfolio for students to share at Open House.
Enjoy the beautiful weather!
