Hi Kindergarten Families!

Here is what's going on in Kindergarten this week:

New Theme: "Monsters and Wild Things"! This theme is a great way to discuss the concepts of "Fiction" vs. "Non-Fiction" which we will be comparing through a variety of books and charting the differences between each genre. We will also talk about the "characters", "setting", "problem" and "solution" in each book that we read. While reading with your child at home, please ask them to identify these story elements in their favorite stories.

Reading: Students will be reading "Kit" and focusing on the "_it" word family (ie: bit, lit, fit)

Word of the Week: "here"

Writer's Workshop: Our hard working writers have completed their very first books!!! We had a celebration last week and read our stories to our big Buddies! Each of these narrative stories focus on where they like to go and are complete with a beautiful handmade cover.  The instructions of how to make these books was very guided, but the writing was all done independently and I am very proud of the way that the students used sight words and "sounded out" spelling to create their sentences. These books will go home next week. Please have your child share these books with you and congratulate them on their hard work! Next week we also begin writing fictional monster themed stories during Writers Workshop.

Math: Students are using dice and 5-Frames to practice the concept of "counting on".  You can do this at home with your child by rolling a dice or just saying a number and asking your child to count on from that number.  They will also continue to practice adding and subtracting with the use of a number line.

The students have been enjoying all of our Halloween inspired songs and chants in class such as "5 Little Pumpkins", "5 Little Bats" and "Halloween Cat"- ask your child to sing these songs to you at home!

Wednesday is 80's day. Show school spirit and send your child to school dress in 80's wear. :)

We will not have Centers on Monday, October 30th so we will not need any classroom volunteers that day. On Tuesday, October 31st, we will have our Halloween Parade at 10:35. Our class party will begin with Halloween party food at 12:30 (If you signed up to bring party food please have it here by 12:15)  Halloween Centers are from 1:00-2:00. Many thanks to Jen Christensen for planning our Halloween party and all of our parent volunteers! The children are going to have such a wonderful time! You make all the difference!

Scholastic book orders are on the way! The books should be here next week!
